As there is an increase in drivers with SUVs and the rapidly growing Crossover, there is an increase in stolen vehicles. A study was conducted by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) to see which SUVs and Crossovers of the 2009, 2010, and 2011 model years were most prone to being stolen. The study period was defined as January 1, 2008 to June 30, 2012.
Overall, nearly 20,000 vehicles were stolen during the designated study period. Since crossovers are a hot item, they dominated the list – holding 7 of the 10 spots.
The top 10 stolen SUVs/Crossovers are:
- Ford Escape
- Chevrolet Tahoe
- Toyota Rav4
- Ford Edge
- Dodge Journey
- Honda CR-V
- Jeep Wrangler (tied with Honda CR-V)
- Jeep Grand Cherokee
- Nissan Rogue
- Nissan Murano
The top 5 states for thefts are California, Texas, Florida, New York, and Michigan. Be mindful of these statistics and how they apply to you.
