If you don’t get a Christmas tree, are you really experiencing the spirit of the holidays? Despite popular belief, live trees don’t have to be a hassle and can be quite the festive feature in any home. But choosing what tree to put in your living room this holiday season takes a bit of consideration. Here are a few things you should look out for in order to pick the best Christmas tree for your family.
- Type – Christmas trees come in a variety of types and species, each with a different shape, color, and level of needle retention. According to the National Christmas Tree Association, the top five trees are the balsam fir, noble fir, Scotch pine, Fraser fir, and Douglas fir. Make sure to ask your local tree farm if they have any of those trees for the best chance at a green tree all season long.
- Lifespan – Keeping a tree alive can sound like a struggle – and a major mess if you fail. To determine how lively a tree is, give it a good shake before making a purchase. If the needles fall off in droves, look for another tree. Once you take your tree home, make sure to water it regularly.
- Hassle-Free – Keeping your tree hassle-free is as easy as making sure the base is straight and measures at least six inches in length. Doing so ensures it will easily fit into most tree bases. Put a sheet beneath the branches for easy needle cleanup.
