Over the last few years, the obsession with Black Friday sales has been seeping into Thanksgiving Day—some now call the day Black Thursday. This is when retailers begin to open on the night of Thanksgiving, which some—including ourselves at Pfeiffer Used Cars—view as an intrusion on one of our most important holidays.
Local retailers in the Grand Rapids area have been working to counteract this trend by promoting Small Business Saturday, a day when shoppers can relax, take a break from chaotic deal-hunting, and actually enjoy personalized customer service in non-big box stores.
Shops like Gazelle Sports and Shuler Books are offering unique deals, like training activities, coupons to nearby cafes, free candles, and more—on top of special discounts on the usual merchandise. In some cases, shoppers will be happy just being able to shop local.
“A lot of time people come into the store and thank me because they didn’t have to go to Target,” said Tim Garrod, owner of Captain Bizzaro’s Treasure World.
